The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) fined Holcim’s cement plant in Theodore, Ala., $100,000 for emissions violations, reported WPMI NBC 15.
A Consent Order issued on Nov. 17 alleged that on multiple dates from February to August 2022, large plumes of dust could be seen rising from the plant.
Holcim officials attributed the plume to the unloading of bauxite from a barge without using adequate wet suppression.
This marks the fourth Consent Order issued by the ADEM to Holcim in the last three years.
In 2019, the company was fined $90,000 for emissions violations. In 2021, ADEM issued Holcim two separate Consent Orders: a $50,750 fine for failing to maintain records and conduct monitoring and a $75,000 fine for failure to monitor and for exceeding emissions limits of dioxin/furan.
